Surrey Merit League
Old Caterhamians III 56
Merton III 0
Off the back of their last win, Old Cats' thirds took on the next big challenge against table-topping Merton.
With only one sub and the pitch resembling a mud a bath, speed was not going to be the order of the day.
Within minutes, strong defence from the Cats' pack had forced a turnover. Quick hands unleashed Matt Buxton for the first score as he got outside his opposite number and left the defence in his wake. The try was unconverted.
Quick ball and good hands through Nye and Buxton left James Saunders with work to do, but the speedy winger stepped past three players to get between the posts for the first of his two tries.
Daniel Christmas added another as he sprang through a gap in the defence and raced in.
Meanwhile, outstanding performances were coming from the pack and clinical finishing from the back line.
Five tries in the first half and five in the second without conceding puts the thirds in line for promotion.
Players of the match were Aaron Boorman and Julian Jameson.
Proud coach Stanley put it down to the "ever increasing strength and depth" of Old Caterhamians.
The Ligers are looking forward to the last two games in the Surrey Merit league.
