A FIRE gutted the roof and top floor of a house in Walton on the Hill last night.
Firefighters from Surrey Fire and Rescue are still on the scene at Heath Drive, where they were summoned at 8.30pm.
On arrival the crew from Reigate found flames had destroyed the roof of the building and the top floor. They managed to stop the flames spreading but the ground floor was completely flooded by the water used to battle the blaze.
The night was so cold that firefighters say the water was freezing as it hit the floor.
A spokesman for Surrey Fire and Rescue Service said: "By the time we turned up the roof was burning through; the fire was going really, really strongly.
"It was very, very cold, the water was coming off the building and freezing on the floor which made it very slippery. The ladders were extended up against the building but then froze in place so we couldn't get them down again."
No one was injured in the fire and the cause is currently unknown.
