CRUSADING knights, Mario and friends and Where's Wally look-a-likes ran, walked and jogged for 24 hours to raise thousands of pounds for charity.

The Reigate Relay for Life took over Priory Park from noon on Saturday to midday Sunday, with members of 17 teams working to complete as many laps as possible of a specially laid-out course.

The route – a huge cancer ribbon marked out on the grass – was surrounded by stalls from groups who kept waiting runners entertained and provided encouragement for those on the course.

Laura Senekal, chairman of the organising committee, said: "It was a fantastic event and all the runners worked so hard. I'm always amazed by how much support we get and this year was no different, with teams cheering each other on throughout. We hope to raise more than £40,000 but won't know for a while yet."

Relay for Life began in America in the 1980s, when a surgeon from Washington walked for 24 hours to raise money for the American Cancer Society. Now the events happen around the world – this was Reigate's second. Runner Kelly Lowing said: "This year was my second Relay for Life and an amazing experience yet again."

Teams must have one member on the course at all times and the event kicks off with a survivors' lap of honour, where cancer survivors complete a lap of the track to the applause and cheers of residents and competitors.
