Despite further disappointment for Banstead's 1st and 2nd XIs, the 3s and 4s lifted the gloom slightly this weekend. The third eleven enjoyed a comprehensive victory over relegation rivals Ashtead on Saturday. Fielding first, Banstead dismissed their opponents for 58 in just 18.4 overs. Matt Brightwell did the bulk of the damage finishing with 5-45, ably supported by the economical Ben Falconer (3-7) before Greg Mclean (2-4) grabbed the final two wickets. Chasing a small target, Banstead's openers were able to be aggressive from the outset. Jamie Stainer (30) and Robbie Joyce (22 not out) ensured that victory was never in doubt claiming victory by 8 wickets in just 11.4 overs. Banstead travel to third place Sunbury this Saturday. Leaders Banstead completed the double over Ashtead with an impressive five wicket win at Avenue Road. Put in by Banstead, Ashtead scored steadily and posted a competitive score despite some tidy Banstead bowling, Alan Lester with 3 for 30 took vital wickets to restrict Ashtead to 182 for 6. Facing the largest total that Banstead have had to chase this year, a brilliant opening partnership of 142 at a rate of over 6 runs per over between Seb Pearce (76) and Mayank Vakharia (64) virtually ensured victory, although Banstead made rather a meal of getting the remaining 40 runs, losing 5 wickets to Caprono-Wint who took 5 for 58. Banstead remain clear at the top with only 6 more games to go. Banstead Cricket Week - Monday 4th August sees the start of Banstead's annual cricket week.
