CHILDREN from Yattendon School have sent a message to the future by burying a time capsule.

The capsule, which will be opened in 50 years' time, includes items which the youngsters think will remind them most of their own childhood when they themselves are nearing retirement.

The ceremony, at Amherst House Care Home, in Court Lodge Road, celebrated National Care Home Open Day , which encourages homes across the UK to open their doors to the local community to help change the view of care facilities.

Yattendon pupil Amelia Farley, aged ten, said: "I put in a music CD because I wanted people in 50 years' time to know what music we listened to. I can't imagine what it will be like to be 50 years old, I wonder what the world will be like then?"

Jamie Greed, aged ten, said: "I put the Yattendon School tie in because it will show the people who open the time capsule what we wore to school."

Other items inside the time capsule included: a mobile phone, an iPod shuffle loaded with songs, a copy of the Surrey Mirror, examples of school work, a class photo and copies of e-mails.

The ceremony was also attended by the Mayor of Horley, councillor Richard Olliver, who said: "The time capsule is such a fantastic idea, it's exciting to think about it one day being opened. It's wonderful that the pupils at Yattendon School could participate in the event and I wish them all the best for their future.

"It's always a pleasure to visit Amherst House, care facilities like this are so important and do so much for the quality of life for older people."

Home manager Arthur Tanare said he wanted the children to choose items that would most remind them of their childhood in 2014.

He added: "It's fascinating to see the sort of things that the children have chosen. It's hard to imagine these same people being here in 50 years' time to dig the capsule back up.

"We're delighted to continue our partnership with Yattendon School, as we believe the younger and older generations in society can learn so much from one another."

A show suite at Amherst House was opened to the public in April. Managers of the £7 million facility are planning a grand opening ceremony for the autumn.
