The wettest weather for more than a third of a century has left parts of Surrey submerged by flood water. It was the wettest day in parts of the county for at least 35 years, according to weather expert Ian Currie. Mr Currie recorded 71.6mm of rain in 24 hours at his weather station on Rickman Hill, above the Chipstead Valley. "This is way above my highest daily total previously," said Mr Currie, who started keeping records at the station in 1978. At Kenley Aerodrome, near Caterham on the Hill, winds reached 71mph at about 1am, with the average wind speed being 40mph. The southerly gust reached violent storm force 11 on the Beaufort Scale. At Charlwood, the Met Office recorded a gust of 62mph, also at about 1am. Floods are causing ongoing chaos on the roads, with water and fallen trees affecting train services. Flood warnings remain in place for more than 50 rivers across the south east, including the River Mole at Leatherhead, Fetcham, Brockham, Pixham, Dorking, Mickleham, Charlwood and Hookwood, Sidlow Leigh and Betchworth; and the Burstow Stream at East, South West and North Horley.
