A SMART phone app called RaindrApp and an innovative toothbrush that stores enough water for three days are among ideas generated by students as part of a project encouraging their peers to save water.

Students in Years 7 to 9 at The Warwick School in Redhill, along with students from The Howard of Effingham School in Leatherhead, have been taking part in the Aqua Innovation pilot project, run by Sutton and East Surrey Water, since it launched in January.

Students in the science, technology, engineering, and maths club also designed a website and games focussed on preserving water. They presented their ideas to a panel of experts at Denbies Vineyard near Dorking last week.

Teacher Matt McKinney said: "I have been delighted to support the students and thoroughly enjoyed the workshops and visit to Bough Beech [reservoir], and learnt a lot myself. They have been very enthusiastic; developing water-saving projects, apps for computers and eagerly spreading the word at school through assemblies, tutor group presentations and even a dance in front of teachers in the staff room."

Sutton and East Surrey Water engineer Daniel Woodworth said: "Working with the students has been a thoroughly rewarding and enjoyable experience. I was amazed by the background level of knowledge they had about water and environmental issues and their ideas and suggestions have been excellent. It has been a pleasure helping them to develop these ideas into actions."

All the students got an award and were presented with United Nations Environment Programme certificates.
