A TREE surgeon has turned a den for vandals into a haven for divers.
Two years ago, the area around Godstone reservoir regularly suffered vandalism.
But Simon Turner has just turned the eight-metre-deep lake into Diver's Cove", in North Park Lane.
"It's a gamble," he told the Mirror. "But I know it'll be worth it. We have carp in there and tadpoles. But we also have some "attractions" in the water that drivers can investigate closer."
Visitors can learn to scuba dive and snorkel to see the creatures that live under the water.
A long planning application process has meant that only the last six months have been dedicated to making sure the site is kitted out.
"We want to make sure that everything is perfect," added the father-of-three. "We have tried to be really considerate of the neighbours that overlook the lake, by using trees to hide much of the diver's descent into the water."
Mr Turner, from Caterham, said he hoped the site will be operational within the next three weeks.
"We are waiting for the electrics to be set up," he said. "When we are all connected we will have a fully functioning cafe as well.
"But at the moment, the peace of the place is disrupted by our generator."
Divers from as young as eight can enjoy the picturesque landscapes and don an oxygen tank to view the underwater wildlife.
The area was formerly known to attract an unwanted element – and it is hoped frequent visitors to the site will deter youngsters from congregating in the area.
"We want schools to come along and use us," added Mr Turner. "We also want to hold a charity fundraiser for Shooting Star – a children's hospice. What those families and children go through is horrific and if they can come along here – even if they just stick their face in the water with a mask on – it would be fantastic to see them smiling."
Mr Turner saw the site, which is owned by Sutton and East Surrey Water, advertised on a property website.
He said: "I love it here – it is so peaceful and beautiful. I haven't been diving yet and I am sure I will be the last one in there."
