A NUISANCE neighbour has been jailed for three months and evicted from his housing association home following repeated antisocial behaviour.

Robert Keegan had "blighted" the lives of residents in Chipstead over several months.

Hyde Housing secured an antisocial behaviour injunction (Asbi) on the 28-year-old, of Water Mead in Chipstead, and he was sent to jail earlier this month after breaching it on three occasions.

Hyde spokeswoman Ruth Appiah said: "We worked hard, for several months, to try to resolve the antisocial behaviour issues in this case, which included noise nuisance, drug use and threatening behaviour, whilst also attempting to support everyone involved.

"However, the issues continued and we had to bring proceedings against Mr Keegan.

"Taking court action is a last resort, but we will seek possession and end a tenancy if a resident is found guilty.

"The Hyde Group takes antisocial behaviour very seriously and will do everything possible to ensure that issues are resolved as swiftly and effectively as possible and to protect residents from antisocial behaviour and its impact on the community. All our residents are aware that their home is at risk if they breach the terms of their tenancy.

"We're committed to working with residents, local community partners and the police, to protect residents from antisocial behaviour and the impact it can have on everyone in a neighbourhood."

An Asbi is similar to an antisocial behaviour order (Asbo), but is a civil order used by housing associations and councils.

Inspector Richard Haycock, borough neighbourhood policing commander, said: "Neighbourhood officers have been working with Hyde Housing in relation to an injunction that has been in place against Robert Keegan, who has been responsible for antisocial behaviour over a period of time which has blighted the lives of residents."

Mr Keegan was sentenced to three months in prison for three counts of breaching his Asbi when he appeared at Reigate County Court on May 17.

The injunction was also extended until May 16, 2014. Keegan was ordered to pay costs of £8,500 and evicted from his home.
