STAINES Police  are appealing for any information following a burglary in Staines where a large quantity of gold jewellery and foreign currency was stolen.

The incident happened sometime between 8-9pm on Tuesday  April 30  at a property in Heath Close, Staines.

It appears that two men entered the property and stole a small safe containing a Rolex watch, gold jewellery and a large amount of foreign currency.

Two men were seen in the area at the time of the incident  , one wearing  grey clothing and the other dressed in beige and black.

A silver saloon car was also seen nearby just prior to this burglary.

DC Barrington Goffe,  who is leading the investigation said: "It would appear that this offence is linked with the recent Asian gold series and we are keen to hear from anyone who might have seen anything or has any information about who might be selling gold in the area.

"I would also like to reassure residents that we are taking these type of offences very seriously and everything possible is being done to bring those responsible to justice."

Anyone with information should contact Surrey Police on 101 quoting reference SL/13/2955 or call Crimestoppers in confidence on 0800 555 111.

Spelthorne Crime Reduction Advisor, Vic Smith, urged  householders to be extra careful with their family heirlooms

He  offered the following security advice:

•It's important to get an up-to-date insurance valuation on any precious jewellery.

•Write down a description and preferably take a photograph for identification purposes.

•Around the home, ensure doors, windows and frames are strong and in good working order.

•This includes the locks on both doors and windows, which should be used at all times.

•A visible burglar alarm will deter a potential intruder.

•Jewellery and cash should be kept safely in an appropriate safe which must be bolted securely to the fabric of the building.

•If you are going away speak to a trusted neighbour and ask them to look after your house. There are things they can do to make your house appear occupied.

Property marking products and personalised crime prevention information is available from the Spelthorne Crime Reduction Advisor, who can be contacted on the Surrey Police non-emergency 101 number.
