SOUTH Holmwood Scouts have marked the completion of major refurbishment works at their Scout centre with a special event.

Members of the 24th Dorking (Holmwood and Capel) Scout Group held an open day and art exhibition to celebrate the completion of the new roof and windows.

Visitors were also able to see improvements to the kitchen and toilet facilities, which were made possible with the help of St Faith's Trust and fundraising by the young members of the group and their parents.

The work was also partly funded by grants from the National Lottery, Mole Valley District Council and Surrey County Council.

During the event Beaver Scouts and Cub Scouts took part in creative activities and painted models to add to the impressive display of artwork.

Mole Valley chairman Caroline Salmon presented artist and creative badges to a group of very happy and talented young scouts.

The district commissioner for Dorking Scouts, Julia Kielstra, presented Thanks Badges to group chairmen Mandy Cooper and Lucy Marshall, as well as the treasurer of the group, Jo Collinson, in recognition of their outstanding contribution to fundraising during the past two years.

Group Scout leader Barbara Roger said: "Our Scout hut is 50 years old, and was showing signs of ageing.

"Now it will last at least another 50 years, providing a wonderful base equal to the excellent adventures that Scouting has to offer young people."
