Network Rail clears rubbish pile after Dorking resident complains

A RUBBISH pile which greeted residents of a picturesque road every day for months has finally been cleared by Network Rail.

Ann Hammond, of Pixham Lane, Dorking, complained to the rail firm after seeing the amount of litter building up behind fencing at the railway bridge.

The fence is owned by Network Rail and, despite there being an access gate outside Mrs Hammond's home, a sign fixed to it warns against opening it for safety reasons.

"Before they put that sign on we used to go and get the rubbish but now we can't," said Mrs Hammond.

"It was such an unpleasant sight.

"It was quite a deliberate act because you have to throw it up about 6ft to get it in there.

"I wish people would just throw it on the road and then I would pick it up."

Mrs Hammond originally wrote to Network Rail on March 14, stating: "The view from our home is of your litter."

She received a reply ten days later informing her that the matter would be investigated but it wasn't until last week that Mrs Hammond was finally greeted with the sight she had been waiting for.

A Network Rail employee came to clear litter from both sides of the railway bridge on Friday and Saturday.

She told the Advertiser this week: "I'm very pleased.

"When you see something every day right in front of your nose but you can't do anything about it, it's just silly."

But she added she would now like to see a similar area along the railway between Chester Close and the A25 cleared by the company.

She also hopes the action taken by Network Rail will not be a one-off.

"I would like them to come back regularly rather than me having to keep hassling them about it," she said.

Jon Crampton, a spokesman for Network Rail, said: "With thousands of miles of track to monitor and maintain we appreciate being alerted to potential issues and will look into this report as soon as possible.

"Anyone with concerns about the railway can report them to us by calling our national helpline on 0845 114141."
