A BODY was discovered by a member of the public in Royal Earlswood Park on Sunday night.
Adrian Sirbu, 47, died from a single stab wound at about 5.30pm.
Police rushed to the park, which stands between East Surrey Hospital and the Royal Earlswood Park residential estate, after a passer-by reported concern for the safety of a man.
But Mr Sirbu was declared dead when ambulance staff arrived ten minutes later.
A mobile police headquarters, three vans and six other vehicles were camped in the area on Sunday night, and the path leading through the park from the road to people's homes was closed off.
Concerned residents were told of an "ongoing investigation", but that there was no danger to the public.
Nigel May, whose flat overlooks the park, told the Mirror: "The police arrived at around 6pm and there was a helicopter overhead.
"I wondered what it was; we thought it might be one of the houses which has an alarm linked to the police station. There were a lot of people around."
Fellow resident Neil Holbrook added: "It is very unusual; it is quite quiet around here.
"I heard he was stabbed, but nothing else. My daughter told me about the police vans, but when we ask they just say there is an investigation going on."
The police exclusion zone remained in place until Tuesday morning. But despite the heavy police presence in the area, no one else is being sought in relation to the death.
Residents were not told what had happened, however, until a post appeared on the Royal Earlswood Park Residents' Association's Facebook group 24 hours afterwards.
Violet Morgan walks her dog in the park. She told the Mirror: "I wondered what was going on, there was a big police van and officers, but no one knew anything.
"I walk through here quite a lot and you don't expect to hear of things like this."
Another resident, who asked not to be named, said: "I travel this way quite a lot and am a bit concerned to hear about this."
An investigation to establish the circumstances leading up to Mr Sirbu's death, who was of no fixed abode, is under way, while a postmortem investigation on Monday revealed the cause of death.
Senior investigating officer Detective Chief Inspector Mark Preston said: "We would continue to appeal to anyone who was in the area on the afternoon of Sunday, March 24 to contact us to help with our investigation."
