AN ALERT has gone out after a stranger tried to get into a woman's car on Caterham Hill.

Posting on a Caterham Facebook page on Monday, Karen Jary said: "Just a word of warning to female drivers in Caterham Hill.

"A man attempted to open my passenger door as I turned into Westway from Chaldon Road at about 5.45pm today so I drove off quick.

"I think he had done it to the car in front of mine as well."

While other site users urged her to report it to police, Nerys Hoey responded that she had suffered the same fate.

She wrote: "A man opened my passenger door when I stopped at the roundabout by Hillcroft School [in Chaldon Road] and asked if I'd drive him to the Tally Ho pub [in Coulsdon Road].

"I said no, I wasn't going that way.

"But it made me very nervous as I was on my own on the way to an after-school club, and my handbag was on the front seat.

"I haven't reported anything as I thought it was a one-off until I saw this."

Surrey Police say they have not been made aware of the incidents yet, but their website outlines some personal safety advice for potentially vulnerable drivers.

Motorists are urged to always lock their car when inside it; never to give a lift to a stranger; and to keep valuables out of sight.

People should also check the interior of their cars – particularly the back seat – on returning to their vehicle.
