RESIDENTS have issued another call for action over the worsening parking problem in and around Oxted.
As reported previously in the Mirror, residents are fed up with motorists parking inconsiderately in their streets to avoid parking charges, and have called for stricter parking enforcement.
Now it has been highlighted that motorists parking at the bottom of Old Oxted High Street up on the curb, particularly opposite the Wheatsheaf pub, are destroying the grass verge and nearby shrubs.
Previous attempts to stop drivers from parking on the grass have failed. The most recent attempt involved metal poles and barrier tape being put in place but this was removed after the poles were damaged in an accident. Local resident Richard Aust has attempted to highlight the problem with Surrey County Council.
In an e-mail sent to Oxted county councillor Nick Skellett he said: "Customers of the pub frequently park on what was the grassed area which has become an unattractive mud patch. The curb has also been damaged. People should be prevented from parking in the area."
Cllr Skellett told the Mirror he has used part of his Community Pride council allowance to buy permanent bollards for the patch of grass, but he was unable to confirm when they would be installed.
