A MAN in his sixties found "on fire" at a Horley care home has died of his injuries.

Emergency services were called to Barnfield Care Home in Upfield at just before 10am on Monday to reports a man was on fire.

Paramedics tended to the 66-year-old patient, who was a resident at the home, before he was airlifted to St George's Hospital in Tooting suffering from serious burns.

He died a few hours later.

A mission report from Surrey Air Ambulance stated his injuries were "accidental".

A spokesman for Anchor, which runs the care home, said the cause of the fire, which began in the garden, was being investigated.

Steven Hamblett, district manager for Barnfield, said: "We are deeply sorry for the sadness this tragic accident has caused.

"Staff rushed to put out a fire in the garden in which a resident was injured but who later died in hospital.

"The staff immediately called the emergency services but the home was not evacuated as there was no risk to anyone else.

"No other people were injured in the fire.

"We have launched an investigation into this isolated incident and we are currently working with the police and other agencies.

"We are speaking to all the residents and their families. The well-being of our residents is paramount."

A Surrey Police spokesman said: "Surrey Police attended an address off Upfield in Horley at around 10am on Monday, February 2, following reports of a concern for safety.

"Surrey Fire and Rescue Service reported that a man was on fire at the location.

"The man, believed to be in his sixties, suffered serious burn injuries and was taken by air ambulance to St George's Hospital in Tooting where he sadly died several hours later.

"Officers are carrying out further enquiries to establish the circumstances surrounding the incident but at this stage there is no indication of any third party involvement."
