FIREFIGHTERS were called to the train tracks just outside Whyteleafe Station after a fault caused a fire on the line.

The crew from Godstone were met by a railway engineer who shut off the power at around 9.15pm on Friday to allow the crew to put out the flames and dealt with a faulty sleeper - a rectangular support - which appeared to be causing the problem.

But when the power returned to the track the electricity continued to arc and railway engineers had to be called to resolve the problem.

The line remained closed while the work was carried out.

A spokesman for Surrey Fire and Rescue said: "When the power returned, the electricity was still arcing so they closed the line and got an engineer out to fix it.

"We were there for about an hour."
