Redhill & Reigate epee fencer Tom Edwards is celebrating after returning from the 2014 Commonwealth Fencing Championships with two medals.
The 21-year-old, who is a former student of St Bede's School, won a bronze medal in the men's epee individual event and a silver in the team event representing Wales. The 2014 championships were held this November in Largs, just outside Glasgow, and brought together more than 300 fencers from 20 Commonwealth nations.
In a hard-fought match, Edwards was edged out in the semi-final by the reigning champion and had to settle for bronze.
In the team event, Wales started the day as number one seeds after the individual event but lost narrowly as the gold medal went to Singapore. After earlier success at the cadet and junior age groups this represents a breakthrough result at the senior level and is a fantastic achievement for the Merstham-based athlete.
Edwards said: "Finishing with a bronze medal at an event of this quality was incredible. But more importantly the result would help Wales with our seeding for the team event.
"Overall, the whole event was a great experience and to leave with two medals in my first Commonwealths was incredible. I am looking to continue my success at this level if selected for the Great Britain seniors in the coming months."
Redhill & Reigate Epee meet on Tuesday's at Royal Alexandra & Albert School, Redhill.
