Beware a council tax phone scam, Tandridge District Council has warned.
At least one resident has fallen foul of the scam - where they are offered reduced council tax and a refund if they pay a £59 fee.
Elderly residents are being called by someone claiming to work for the council.
The bogus caller or callers have tried it on in Caterham and Warlingham, with suspicious housholders notifying the council.
A council spokesman said: "We would never contact residents to ask for bank or other personal details.
"We will always ask residents to call 01883 722000 to speak to us, so they can be sure they are talking to council officers."
If you know of anyone who is contacted in this way call Consumer Direct 03454 040506, visit www.adviceguide.org.uk, or call Surrey Police on 101.
