A GROUP from The Hawthorns School in Bletchingley visited the Flanders battlefields to mark the centenary of the start of the First World War.

The 29 pupils, parents, staff and governors visited the Menin Gate Memorial of the Missing in Ypres, Lissenhoek Military Cemetery and key battle sites on The Somme.

Students said the highlight was visiting the Menin Gate for the daily act of commemoration.

Every day at 8pm, buglers sound the Call to Attention, which is followed by the Last Post.

Three members of the group – school librarian Philippa Moyle, and pupils Simon Edwards and Lizzie Bickerstaff – then laid a wreath.

Jo Taylor, the school's head of history, said: "It was fantastic trip everyone from the youngest to the oldest has been able to learn from."
