EIGHT cats and kittens have been saved after they were found abandoned in a small cage, covered in their own muck.

The animals, aged between a few weeks old and two years, were found dumped in woods at the weekend.

They were in a bad condition and covered in faeces but are now recovering in the care of RSPCA volunteers in Horley.

But this is just one in a string of discoveries according to the charity.

"Some people dump them at the vets and they get found on the doorstep or others just abandon them on paths where people walk their dogs hoping they'll be found," said Helen Braysher, a branch volunteer with Surrey East RSPCA.

"A pregnant cat was dumped just over a week ago and has since had kittens. It's almost weekly we're getting a cat or cats being dumped."

Rescue workers say they are struggling to keep up with the demand for homing and assisting pets that have been abandoned.

It is thought the majority of the cats that have been found recently have come from owners who have allowed their cats to have kittens with the idea of selling them on for less money than pet shops charge.

Ms Braysher said: "People can part with them for £20 or £30. They're not neutered or vaccinated and often when we find them they've got fleas or worms.

"It's people getting these cats and they don't think beyond the end of their nose with the extra costs.

"We're struggling to keep up."

Anyone who discovers an abandoned pet should call the RSPCA on 07870 287 571.
