Limpsfield orchard delivers bumper crop

LIMPSFIELD Community Orchard has had its first proper harvest since its trees were planted four years ago.

Nine apple varieties were picked from the orchard off Westerham Road, and there was enough fruit in the orchard for most of the 40 visitors to the Harvest Day to be able to take some home.

A box of apples was also taken to Limpsfield School.

Community orchard chairman Helen Ellson said: "We are certain our January wassail, which was held to ensure a good harvest by banishing the devils, paid a good part in this.

"However the wet temperate winter and the warm and sunny summer may have been more the reason why the crop was so good for such a fledgling orchard."

The trees also benefited from the earwig refuges which were made by children at Limpsfield School.

Earwigs migrate from the refuges to the trees, eating aphids and other damaging insects.
