SOUTH Park manager Joe McElligott has challenged forwards Joe Jackson and Kieran Lavery to match the goal-scoring feats of team-mate Chris Smith, writes Kaylee Seckington.
After finishing last season as the Combined Counties League's top scorer as South Park were crowned champions, Smith has scored 12 goals so far in the Ryman League, with just one from the penalty spot.
However, the slight striker failed a late fitness for Saturday's game at Sittingbourne giving Joe Jackson a chance to partner Kieran Lavery on top, the former netting twice in a 2-0 win in Kent.
And McElligott is delighted with the Sparks' strength in depth.
"We hoped Chris Smith would start the game but he wasn't fit," the manager said. "We went with Joe Jackson and Kieran Lavery up top and I think Joe's physical presence helped swing the game in our favour.
"Chris is obviously the Ryman South's top scorer currently, but hopefully Kieran and Joe will chase him for it.
"It was really pleasing result and it was great to get the clean sheet as well."
South Park now turn their attention to two cup games, starting with their FA Trophy debut on Saturday when they travel to Ryman North side Cheshunt.
"The FA Vase was always a competition we looked for, but now we have the chance to step up with the bigger boys," McElligott said. "We look forward to the journey. We like the FA competitions because you get the chance to play someone away from your division."
The Sparks then host old Combined Counties League foes Guildford City in a Surrey Senior Cup tie on Tuesday night.
"It's swung around a bit because two or three seasons ago they were one of the bigger sides in the Combined Counties and then they got promoted," McElligott said. "They are back there now but I'm sure their manager will be looking to galvanise his side with another promotion push in mind. My youngest son's side, Horley, played against them recently, so I might ask him what to expect."
