Osborne wants Warlingham reaction after cup game forfeit

WARLINGHAM skipper Jon Osborne is hoping to see his side get back to winning ways on Saturday after they were forced to forfeit last weekend's RFU Intermediate Cup match.

Cup regulations state both sides must have a minimum of five registered front-row players in their squad, a requirement the Wars were unable to fulfil for Saturday's tie against Maidstone.

Not only do the Wars lose their place in this year's competition but they will also be banned from next year's cup and received a hefty fine.

But skipper Osborne insists it was unavoidable.

"We had quite a few players unavailable and another team playing so it's not like we could nick their players," he explained.

"I think it's to avoid teams playing weakened sides in the cup competitions and having uncontested scrums, but front rows aren't easy to find and it's a very specialist position – you can't just stick anyone in there.

"The cup wasn't our priority this season but it's disappointing to exit it in this way."

However, Osborne is hoping to see his side put the cup disappointment, and a 36-3 league defeat to Tottonians the previous weekend, behind them when they travel to Tadley on Saturday.

Their hosts sit second to bottom of London Two South West with a single point to their name, but the Wars will not be taking them lightly.

"We were awful against Tottonians and had two yellow cards, so I'm hoping for a much improved performance," he said. "Tadley haven't had a great start to the season, but I know they have had quite a few injuries so their might be starting to improve.

"We will go there hoping to pick up a win, but it's important we put in a good performance."
