WARLINGHAM School was busier than Clapham Junction when it played host to a model railway exhibition at the weekend.

Working layouts, trade stands and demonstrations were in abundance when the Croydon Model Railway Society held its show on Saturday and Sunday.

Miniature trains – bolstered by a backdrop of intricate models of shops, houses and countryside – wended their way around tracks on a series of layouts with evocative names such as Bodgit and Much Pottering, and also Little Pressingdon. An evocative layout featured the train system set up near Ypres during the First World War.

Among the most impressive creations was a model of trams running through Croydon.

The layout has previously been set up at the House of Commons in 2006 as part of an exhibition on extending the Croydon Tramlink system.

It has also featured on a DVD compiled for the BBC and also at the London Transport Museum in Acton.

Another featured a West Croydon street scene.

In contrast, one enterprising exhibitor set up his train layout on an ironing board.

Hundreds of visitors of all ages – ranging from the very young to those just young-at-heart – attended the exhibition over the two days.

The society, which was formed in 1947, currently has about 30 members.

Meetings are held on Wednesday evenings at its clubroom in South Croydon.
