THE OPERATORS of a drilling site off Horse Hill announced this morning that oil has been discovered at the site.
David Lenigas, chairman of Horse Hill Developments, the company which runs the site, told BBC Surrey that the company hoped to begin extracting the oil within two years.
The company spent most of August constructing the exploration well and has repeatedly assured residents that it will remain free of fracking, a controversial technique designed to recover gas and oil from shale rock.
But on Sunday, Frack Free Surrey held a protest picnic at the site over fears that fracking could take place in the future. A public meeting is also planned at the Empire Hall in Victoria Road, Horley, on October 13.
