NEW bus stop marking rules, which forbid any sort of stopping or loading by other vehicles, have been approved by Surrey County Council.

meeting of the council's Reigate and Banstead Local Committee on Monday, councillors voted through the new restrictions at 47 bus stops in the borough on Monday.

Routes affected are the 430 and 435 from Redhill to Merstham and the 424, 420 and 460 routes from Earslwood to Whitebushes.

These routes currently have yellow cages painted on the road to denote the bus stops but these are not enforceable as parking restrictions.

The new bus stop markings – called clearways – will prohibit stopping and unloading by all other vehicles which can be enforced by police and traffic wardens.

At the bus stops affected, which include stops including Battlebridge Lane, Merstham; Frenches Road, Redhill; and Woodlands Road, Earlswood, the kerbs have been raised to aid access.

But aAt the meeting, councillors raised concerns about banning all other vehicles from stopping in the bus stops, since some are in residential areas.

Councillor for Reigate Hill Roger Newstead said: "Would we grant some sort of exemption for builders lorries or removal vans?"

But the council's transport officer, Alison Houghton, said: "There's no exemption." It is whether the restrictions are enforceable or not. It either is or isn't."
