AN INSIGHT into the work of engineers has been given to pupils at Hamsey Green Primary School.
Four staff from Croydon-based engineering consultancy Mott MacDonald visited the school in Tithe Pit Shaw Lane last term.
Pupils learned about different types of renewable energy and were then invited to pedal a bike fast enough to power a lightbulb.
They also created model wind turbines, played an energy conservation board game and finished the afternoon with an "energy dance".
Ed Morgan, a graduate engineer with Mott MacDonald, who organised the event, said: "It was really rewarding to engage with the community and promote sustainable practices."
One Year 4 pupil said: "The afternoon was really fun.
"I loved making the wind turbine and I never knew I could generate energy to light the bike bulb."
The school hopes to develop links with Mott MacDonald further.
Lisa Kirk, sustainable schools co-ordinator at Hamsey Green, said: "We are always keen to involve the children in hands-on activities."
