THE battle is over – plans for new homes on the former site of the Marie Curie hospice in Caterham have been approved.

At Tandridge's planning committee meeting on July 19, 24 dozen apartments, three terraced houses and a detached house on the site off Harestone Road were given the green light. The hospice closed in 2009 and was demolished in February last year. The site was bought in March 2011 and plans to build a care home, offices, 25 flats and five houses there were rejected in March 2012, upheld by a Government planning inspector.

In December, another application for 24 apartments, a 14-bed care home, three terraced houses, a detached 5-bedroom house and an office was withdrawn and the latest application was submitted.

Cllr Connolly said: "The inspector said the development would cause significant harm to the area. I do not believe the current application is better."
