A TEN-YEAR-OLD chess ace is making all the right moves after qualifying for the national squad.

Amardip Ahluwalia , a pupil at Copthorne Prep School, will play for the under-11 England team, after trials in Liverpool.

The chess whizz began playing when he was in Year 2 and now encourages younger pupils to share his enthusiasm.

Sussex and Copthorne chess coach Jonathan Tuck said he believes Amardip has the potential to be at the top of the game internationally.

He said: "I can see Amardip winning many more awards and titles in chess in future years. He has an exceptional attitude, combining his chess activities with his academic work and other school commitments."

During the Easter holidays, Amardip won the National IAPS U13 individual title and captained the U11 Copthorne Prep winning team. He played in the European Schools Championships in Serbia last June and will return to the championships in Greece later this year.

He is the third Copthorne Prep student to be selected for England, following in the footsteps of Joshua Higgs, now 14, and Polly Lambert, now 19.
