RETIRED seafarers, who often missed family events while on duty, spent Father's Day with their loved ones at a care home in Banstead.
Residents at the Royal Alfred Seafarers' Society home marked the special day by welcoming family members, who were also given a glimpse of life at the home.
Commander Brian Boxall-Hunt OBE, chief executive of the society, said: "Often seafarers can spend many years away from their families and consequently miss family gatherings such as birthdays and anniversaries.
"Having time with loved ones in retirement is extremely important to our residents and we encourage people to visit their relatives when they can."
John Plumb, 82, who lives at the home, said: "My wife and I are extremely lucky to have had such a long and happy life together. We spent many years apart when I was at sea, so having family around me on this special day is priceless."
Mr Plumb served for 12 years as a Royal Marine, having joined the forces in 1950. During his service, he visited Malaya, Malta, Tripoli and Egypt. Last year, he and his wife celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary at the home, where their daughter regularly visits them.
Cdr Boxall-Hunt added: "At Royal Alfred, our retired seafarers have a wealth of shared life experience and there is a great camaraderie between them."
