A VETERAN former councillor is embarking on a gruelling cycle challenge – at the age of 75.
Michael Ormerod was a Reigate and Banstead borough councillor for 31 years, culminating in him being made an honorary freeman of the borough.
Tomorrow afternoon (Thursday) he sets off from The Shard, at London Bridge, for an exhausting 24 hours.
He will cycle from London to Paris, a distance of 200 miles, in the space of a day.
Crossing the English Channel by ferry, he will leave the French port of Dieppe at the unearthly hour of 4am to cycle the 125 miles to Paris, aiming to arrive by 4pm.
The ride is one of a series of sponsored challenges run by Reigate & Redhill YMCA.
Dr Ormerod is raising money to support their work with disabled children and disadvantaged young adults.
He said: "Over the least seven years, I have led a variety of cycling challenges for our local YMCA, including Redhill to Paris in three and two days.
"This year, I decided to attempt a tougher one-day challenge, starting in central London, while I am still young enough to complete the distance."
He is being sponsored by the Everest Spice, Redhill's Nepalese and Indian restaurant.
Its owner Rosan Sapkota said: "I am delighted to support the excellent work of the YMCA in our local community.
"Dr. Ormerod first told me about the YMCA six years ago and since then, a charity curry night has become a regular feature.
"I wish him good luck in this epic venture."
