SURREY Police have launched a new scheme to make it easier for people with communication difficulties to contact them.
The scheme, known as Pegasus "Help Me Help You", stores information which has been provided by people with speech, hearing, mental health or learning disabilities.
Pegasus is free to use and once someone has registered they will be sent a card with their own PIN number to be used when making contact with officers.
Callers can quote the PIN number and the call handler will be able to respond immediately by getting the information from the database. This means they can quickly tell police why they have called rather than spend time going through their details.
PC Mike Patey from the diversity directorate at Surrey Police said: "Pegasus is not just about contacting the police by telephone, you can also show your card to a police officer, member of police staff or any emergency service partner if you require assistance in person. This will let the officer or emergency services worker know that you may require additional help and support."
