A MUM of two has proved to be a cut above the rest in the doggy world.
Linda Barker nervously took part in her first-ever international competition last month – and promptly won the best in show award, beating all-comers from across Europe.
Her artistry with snippers and a comb led to stunning, eye-catching work on her poodle called Ebony at MilanGroom in Italy.
Competitors were given 2 hours 30 minutes for their canine makeovers. The judges checked everything from the depth and quality of the dog's coat to any loose hairs before announcing the winner out of about 200 entrants.
Mrs Barker, of Pendell Road, Bletchingley, said: "I'm really pleased. It was a long old drive to Italy but the result helped make it all worthwhile."
"But I've had some best in show wins in British events prior to this, and have also been a judge in shows held in Europe."
The design she fashioned for Ebony was a "traditional hunting trim".
She explained: "Up to about 100 years ago many poodles were working dogs. Because they might go through bracken and water their coats would be cut, apart from the areas around their vital organs, knees and ankles."
Mrs Barker won a place in the British dog grooming team earlier this year and is one of only four groomers chosen to represent England at next year's world championships.
Mrs Barker has been a dog groomer for about 20 years, running her business in Bletchingley.
She said: "I enjoy competing at events. I have many dog grooming friends around Europe through either judging or taking part in competitions."
Her father, Steven, of London Road, Merstham, said: "We are immensely proud and she does a fantastic job in grooming dogs.
"It's quite an achievement that she should be selected to go abroad."
He added: "It started many years ago when we first got a poodle in 1986.
"Linda is one of the top groomers in the country now.
"To be chosen for the British team out of only three is a real achievement."
