LINGFIELD lost out in a Bank Holiday derby with local rivals East Grinstead Town today (Monday).
Dixie Dean's men had been hoping to put another dent in the Wasps' hopes of finishing second in the Sussex County League Division One, having dropped to third after a disappointing 3-0 defeat to Littlehampton Town on Saturday.
But Grinstead bounced back with the perfect response at Godstone Road, as two goals from Matt Geard gave them victory in a scrappy local derby.
The Wasps had the better of the chances in the first half, with Michael Belli going close twice, either side of Geard's opener on 21 minutes, with the former Crawley Down midfielder showing composure to finish off a fine team move, involving Craig Goodsir and Kieron Pamment.
And Geard doubled the visitors' advantage 12 minutes into the second half, firing in a superb free kick from just outside the box to give his side some breathing space.
Lingfield huffed and puffed as they looked for a route back into the game, but the Wasps comfortably closed out the match to move back into second place, courtesy of Littlehampton losing 3-2 at champions East Preston.
