Top award won by East Surrey Hospital team

A TOP team of doctors and nurses at East Surrey Hospital have been rewarded for their dedication.

The work of the acute stroke team was recognised at an annual event to celebrate the achievements of health staff who have gone over and above the call of duty.

The team, who work on Chaldon ward, won the team compassion accolade in the Surrey and Sussex Proud To Care Awards, run by NHS England.

One patient who nominated the team said: "Dad was admitted after suffering a stroke, it was my worst nightmare.

"The care and compassion was second to none."

Maternity matron Denise Newman was a runner-up in the individual public choice award – a category with 109 people, all nominated by the public.

One patient described her as: "Kind, compassionate, caring, supportive and loving – she has healed our family in ways in which we can never thank her enough for."

Michael Wilson, chief executive of Surrey and Sussex Healthcare NHS Trust, said: "It's wonderful to see the hard work, care and commitment of our stroke team and Denise's passion for patient care recognised.

"I'm very proud of them all."
