Shock defeats for Whyteleafe and Merstham but South Park take a step closer to title

Football round-up. AFTER not losing a game for more than six months, Whyteleafe were defeat for the second outing in a row on Tuesday night. Skipper Jason Thompson scored a hat-trick for Leafe but it was not enough to stop them slipping to a 5-3 defeat to Erith Town. The defeats open up the Southern Counties East League title race with Ashford United now just three points behind Leafe and Tunbridge Wells six points. Merstham's hopes of a late dash for the Ryman League Division One South play-offs took a hit on Tuesday as their great run was ended at Sittingbourne. Thomas Loynes scored the only goal of the game for the Kent side on 65 minutes. There was also only one goal in it as Redhill secured a valuable three points against Ramsgate at Kiln Brow. The Lobsters took the lead through a first half Marcus Elliott penalty and despite the Rams hit the woodwork on several occasions, held on for all three points. South Park ended Cove's 12 match unbeaten run in the Combined Counties League with a hard earned 2-1 victory at Oak Farm. Park took the lead in the 15th minute when Kieran Lavery volleyed home from 15 yards and then increased their lead in the 73 minute when Adam Pullin held off his marker, turned and shot across the keeper. Park's two goal lead was short lived as Cove converted a penalty in the 78th minute. Lingfield drew 1-1 at Lancing, with Clinton Moore scoring their equaliser in the second half.
