A CHELSEA team and ex-England cricketer Phil Tufnell attracted 450 people to Redhill Football Club on Sunday.
The Chelsea FC Foundation side – comprising many of the club's coaches – took on a Reigate and Banstead Mayoral Invitation XI.
Also among its ranks was Scott Nurse, who played 20 international matches for Guyana.
The mayor's team comprised players from Redhill, South Park, Horley, Chipstead and Reigate Priory football clubs.
Mayor Cllr Dr Lynne Hack met both teams and then kicked off the match, which ended in a 1-1 draw.
At half time, children from local football clubs took part in a penalty shoot-out with former England cricketer and Question of Sport panellist Phil Tufnell in goal.
After the match, the penalty takers were each given a Chelsea FC goody bag. Chelsea's mascot Stamford also attended.
Although the match ended in a draw, the mayor presented a trophy to Chelsea to thank them for their participation.
Then various VIPs, including mayors from other Surrey districts, enjoyed a reception in the clubhouse.
David Duke, the mayor's driver who helped to organise the game, said: "It was a competitive match played in a really friendly spirit.
"Thankfully the weather stayed bright, although it did turn cold.
"I think Phil Tufnell was surprised at the standard of the children's penalty taking, although he did manage to save about five."
The proceeds from the event, provisionally estimated at about £1,600, will be split between the Royal Marsden Cancer Charity and Surrey Crimestoppers.
