New double yellow lines proposed for 77 roads across Reigate and Banstead - FULL LIST HERE

DOUBLE yellow lines and other parking restrictions are set to be imposed across Reigate and Banstead, after the second borough-wide review was completed.

Surrey County Council could introduce new on-street regulations at 77 sites to crack down on commuter and inconsiderate parking, including drivers who leave vehicles on verges, those who add to congestion around schools, and commuters who park in residential streets.

It follows requests for action at 400 locations made by residents, councillors, and emergency and public service organisations over the past 15 months.

The plan, which includes proposals which will affect parts of 32 roads in Redhill, plus dozens more in Reigate, Banstead, Horley, Salfords, Merstham, Lower Kingswood, Tadworth and Epsom Downs, was presented at the Reigate and Banstead Local Committee last week.

But some councillors questioned the point in imposing restrictions if they were not going to be enforced.

Referring to a proposal for yellow lines in Heathcote, Tadworth, home to Tadworth Primary School, county councillor Michael Gosling said: "What mother knows how to see a yellow line? They don't.

"What we are saying is, 'don't park there on safety grounds; don't park there because it's annoying to the residents'. But if we don't enforce it, why do we do it? We need to get on with enforcing restrictions, or we might as well not bother."

Borough councillor Rachel Turner agreed there were "tremendous problems" in Heathcote, with parents "just parking wherever they want" and said her Tadworth and Walton ward did not see much enforcement.

Other areas singled out for comment during the meeting at Reigate Town Hall included roads around Salfords railway station.

Parish councillor Jim Blackmore told the committee the introduction of double yellow lines "might make matters worse, not better", by encouraging drivers to park all four wheels on the verges, rather than two.

A residents' only parking restriction for Lynwood Road, in Redhill, is among the proposals, to "prevent parking by non-residents", while councillors were told other permit-parking residents' zones are to be considered later this year for the town's Redstone Hill area, and roads between the A23, A25 and Whitepost Hill.

Redhill East councillor Jonathan Essex welcomed the permit parking, saying residents had wanted them for a long time.

Traffic regulation orders will need to be consulted on later this year before the changes can be introduced.
