THE Redhill stench is as bad as ever today, more than six weeks after the operators of the town's landfill site were ticked off for allowing landfill gases to escape, in breach of their licence.
Now, the Environment Agency is considering setting up a "long-term" air quality monitoring station in the area.
Biffa, which runs the Cormongers Lane site, says it has installed 100 new wells as part of a major operation to stem the pong, which has been a strong prescence in the air since January 19.
But with residents across the area holding their noses once again this morning, patience is running thin and questions are being asked about when the problem will be solved, and what the Environment Agency is doing about it.
At the end of January, Biffa told the Mirror works which would have "the most impact" to stem the stink would be concluded within two weeks, and residents would notice "a gradual improvement".
The Environment Agency is continuing to monitor the situation but has not taken any enforcement action against Biffa.
The agency installed air qaulity monitoring equipment around the area on February 14, and said then it would be analysed by Public Health England after two weeks. That has not yet happened.
An agency spokesman said: "We are continuing to gather air quality data.
"As soon as the results are known we will work with our partners at Public Health England to interpret the information and then share the results with Surrey County Council, Reigate and Banstead Borough Council, and the local community.
"In addition to the previous data collection, we have been carrying out additional monitoring of air quality data in response to information we have received from the local community. This has involved inspecting the area around the boundary of the site and using hand-held assessment equipment. We are now considering putting in place a long-term static air monitoring station, and are carrying out assessments of potential locations for placing this unit.
"We will continue to work with our partners and the local community to resolve the ongoing issues, and would encourage people who experience odour issues to call our free 24/7 incident hotline on 0800 807060."
