A GANG of four men broke into a Redhill flat and assaulted a man in his 20s with a weapon – believed to be a hammer - in the early hours of this morning.
At around 1am, the group forced their way into the flat in The Dome, Dome Way, and attacked the resident who required hospital treatment for head injuries.
Police believe the incident was a targeted attack and though the flat was damaged by the break-in, nothing is believed to have been taken.
Investigating officer Detective Constable Kerry Akehurst said: "We received several calls from residents in connection with this incident and I would like to reassure those people that we are doing all we can to find those responsible.
"We are still in the very early stages of our investigation but we do believe that this was a targeted rather than random occurrence.
"We are currently following up a number of enquiries but I would urge anyone who was in the area around the time of the incident to contact us as they may hold information vital to our investigation."
An 18-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of aggravated burglary and is currently in police custody.
The victim required stitches following the attack.
Officers from the Reigate and Banstead Safer Neighbourhood Team are assisting detectives with their investigation by carrying reassurance patrols in the area.
