TANDRIDGE District Council has put up posters in Godstone Road, Whyteleafe, warning people of the dangers of floodwater to health. Large notices pinned to both ends of the makeshift pedestrian footbridge alongside the flooded A22 by the BP petrol station warn of the perils as water from the Caterham bourne continues to pour into Whyteleafe, Kenley and Purley. The district council says in the notice: "Avoid contact with the floodwater and wash your hands regularly. Swallowing floodwater or mud can cause diarrhoea, fever, or abdominal pain. Mention the flood if you see your GP within 10 days for abdominal complaints." Notices are posted in many places, too, by the Sutton and East Surrey Water Company, which is keen to reiterate the message that drinking water is safe and pure, despite the huge fire brigade operation to save the Kenley Water Treatment Works in Godstone Road from being inundated by floodwater. The firm emphasises that the plant is working nornally inside.
