FLOOD-HIT communities are being urged to remain vigilant as river and groundwater levels are expected to rise once again. The Environment Agency has this afternoon issued a warning to residents about the continuing threat of flooding this weekend. The Met Office has a severe weather warning in place for heavy rain in Surrey tomorrow, Friday, lasting until the early hours of Saturday. The Environment Agency said groundwater levels across the region, including in Surrey, are high and still rising. Spokesman Mark Heelis said: "Today, tomorrow and into the weekend we are expecting heavy rainfall which will continue to raise the threat of flooding to communities in the South East. "We are monitoring the situation very closely as river and groundwater levels across the South East remain high and responsive, and standing water remains in some flood plains. "Environment Agency teams remain out on the ground around the clock operating pumping stations, issuing flood warnings and checking that flood banks, walls and barriers are working effectively," he added. "We urge communities to prepare in advance by signing up for free flood warnings and to take action if they receive one. A flood warning indicates that flooding is expected and immediate action is required." A flood alert - meaning flooding is possible - issued for the River Mole yesterday, remains in place. It covers the Mole and its tributaries, and the areas of Sidlow, Leigh, Betchworth, Brockham, Pixham, Dorking, Mickleham, Leatherhead, Fetcham, Stoke D'Abernon and Cobham. The Ifield Brook, Upper River Mole, Gatwick Stream, Burstow Stream and Salfords Stream also remain on flood alert this afternoon, with Ifield, Lowfield Heath, Charlwood, Hookwood, Bewbush, Furnace Green, Maidenbower, Crawley, Horley, Copthorne and Salfords all potentially affected. The Environment Agency has also maintainted flood alert status in the Caterham Bourne catchment, affecting parts of Caterham, Whyteleafe, Kenley, Purley, South Croydon, Beddington and Carshalton.
