Pet owners have been urged to be cautious after a spate of dog thefts in the borough. In one incident, which occurred between December 9-10 last year a six-year-old Yorkshire Terrier named Florrie went missing from a garden in Redhill. According to Stephanie Kent-Nye from Stolen and Stray Pet Recovery, the pet just disappeared from the garden after being allowed to walk around the rural property freely. In another incident, which occurred on Sunday, January 12 between 11-3pm, a bull greyhound went missing from a property in Reigate while the owner was out with her children. A rough coated male fawn and small red male terrier also went missing in the same incident. Mrs Kent-Nye warned that pets, in particular certain breeds of dogs, were a prime target for thieves looking to sell the animals on for cash or to keep for breeding. "It is happening and there's particular dogs that are targeted, mainly gundogs and lapdogs," she told the Mirror. She added: "People aren't aware of how much this is going on until they're in this awful situation and then there's a massive learning curve of what to do and by the time people find out the trail's gone cold. "We do have situations when people will break into a house or car but pet owners can help themselves. One thing is never ever leave your dog unattended outside a shop, always make sure your garden in well fenced and be vigilant of what's happening in your area because they'll generally go to a particular area carry out a spate of thefts and then move on. "Also, if you hear your dog barking outside, do take a look." Anyone with information on these missing dogs or who needs help in tracking down their pets should call Stolen and Stray Pet Recovery on 01490 460 369.
