THE discovery of asbestos at Woldingham School has culminated in a Caterham firm being fined £50,000.
A building worker found asbestos insulation board in the basement back in 2011, leading to the area being sealed off by a licensed asbestos contractor.
Buxton Building Contactors - based in High Street, Caterham, was also ordered to pay £26,217 costs after admitting failing to plan, manage and properly monitor the construction work at the school.
The prosecution at Guildford Crown Court on Monday was carried out by the Health and Safety Executive.
The court heard the firm had allowed unrestricted access by various other workers, including a 19-year-old apprentice electrician who had been working in the undercroft for at least two weeks.
