THE caretaker of Reigate Grammar School is recovering at home this week after a fall.

Fred George, 61, tripped on a staircase in the school's administration block in Reigate Road, and fell down nine stairs, hitting a post at the bottom.

He was taken to East Surrey Hospital where medics discovered he had broken four ribs, cracked seven and fractured his collar bone.

The incident occurred on the penultimate day of term and Mr George, who has nine grandchildren, spent a week in hospital.

"I'm still taking plenty of painkillers and loads of medication," he said on Tuesday.

"I'm supposed to be off work for a month but I'm doing a few light jobs. I'm just so sore and the pain has been bad."

School spokesman Hannah Graydon said last week: "Colleagues and students at Reigate Grammar School wish Fred George a speedy recovery following a tumble on the stairs.

"Everyone at the school wishes Fred all the very best; his cheeky smile and sense of humour is sorely missed and we all hope to see his smiling face back at RGS very soon."
