DEMENTIA is a growing problem and 25 per cent of people believe there is nothing can be done to help you once you are diagnosed.
These are the stark findings from the group Dementia Friendly Surrey, which is looking for residents to volunteer their time to become a dementia "champion".
The hope is these volunteers will support those with dementia and their families.
Group member Donal Hegarty told Surrey County Council's Tandridge Local Committee on Friday, June 28: "We have developed the project to support people who live with the illness in their own community.
"There has long since been a stigma attached to dementia and we want people to understand the illness, and not judge it."
The group also wants to team up with schools to educate the younger generation.
Mr Hegarty added: "There is a £5,000 grant up for grabs for anyone who will help support those with dementia and their families. So, say, if a rotary club wants to have a coffee morning for them, we will be able to help fund it."
