THE biggest charity event in Reigate College's calendar raised £400 for the Samaritans.

An afternoon of events, organised by the students' union, followed morning talks from representatives from the charity on the college's equality and community day.

This year's event, on June 26, focussed on mental health issues and the importance of recognising and dealing with stress.

Students were set the task of producing a leaflet incorporating everything they had learnt in the morning sessions. It was followed by a lunchtime barbecue, bouncy castles and live music from some of the Castlefield Road college's bands.

Equality officer at Reigate College, Susie Ferguson, said: "The aim of the sessions run by the Samaritans was to offer the students advice about how to recognise when a friend is struggling to cope and what they might do to help that friend.

"They also outlined ways to strengthen their own emotional resilience, if they ever feel themselves becoming stressed."
