WITH THE promise of sun-kissed days ahead, a celebrity chef is urging Surrey residents to get composting this summer.
Surrey County Council has sold nearly 14,000 compost bins as part of its discounted bin scheme in the past four years, which has helped to stop more than 8,000 tonnes of waste being disposed of.
Michelin-star winning chef, Raymond Blanc said:"The summer months are a good time of year to either start or keep composting because there's lots of material which can be thrown into the compost bin like grass cuttings and salad scraps from barbecue or torn up cardboard from packaging sleeves."
The chef, whose new resteraunt is due to open in Farnham, added: "I'd encourage anyone with a garden to give composting a go."
Mole Valley District council are hoping that increasing numbers of residents will see the environmental benefits of home composting:
"Re-cycling food waste into compost is environmentally friendly and provides a nutrient-rich food product for the garden"
"Composting is easy to do, and there are lots of things you can add to your compost bin or heap.
"It takes just a few quick steps to get started."
John Furey, Surrey County Council's Cabinet Member for Transport, Highways and Environment said:
"Our campaign is a great opportunity to promote the importance of composting to our residents.
It only takes a few quick and easy steps to get started and yet it can save money and make a really positive difference to the environment."
Discounted bins are still available through the scheme and there are simple step-by-step guides available on how to get started or make your own compost heap, what to compost and other useful advice.
