Memories of Mondays at the town's market

YESTERYEAR'S features earlier this year on Dorking's livestock market in the 1960s have prompted one reader to write in with her memories.

Eileen Etheridge (née Charman), of Driftwood, Lodge Close, North Holmwood, was fascinated to see the photos taken some 45 years ago extracted from a reel of film loaned to the Advertiser by Leigh farmer Derek Harrington.

She writes: "Derek Harrington's article about Dorking Market brought back memories for me. From when I was 19 in 1947 until I left to have my first child in 1954, I worked as secretary to Mr Lewis Crow who shared his office in South Street with Mr Bill Keasley, who ran the estate agency side of the surveyors' business.

"Lewis took care of the agricultural side of things and visited all the local farms each year to do their stocktaking. He kept little books with marks everywhere which I was then given to type and make some sense of. All the names in Mr Harrington's article were familiar to me.

"Every Monday the market was held in the marketplace, where Marks & Spencer is today. Mr George Moore estate agent, of White & Sons, and Mr Lewis Crow officiated as auctioneers on alternate weeks.

"There was also a general auction held in the auction room on the site at which furniture and bric-a-brac was sold.

"I was often called upon to take notes, which I enjoyed as it made a change from the office."

Lewis Crow lived to a great age and was in his 90s when he died. Sadly, his son Maurice died while in his 50s, so the business did not last in the same form for long.

The auction rooms "Crow's" in the Dorking Halls car park are still a reminder of those days."
